Myth: Excess consumption of sugar causes diabetes.
Fact: Excess consumption of sugar does not cause diabetes, but it does contribute to obesity, which is a major risk factor for diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease; type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics as well as lifestyle factors. Myth: People with type 2 diabetes who need to use insulin are in serious trouble.
Fact: At the early stages most of the people with type 2 diabetes manage blood sugar level well with oral medications. But type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease. Over time, the body’s insulin production capacity lowers and oral medications may not be enough to keep blood glucose levels within normal range. Myth: Diabetic patient should not eat a fruit.
Fact: A diabetic patient can eat fruit but the amount, type of fruit and time of fruit consumption should be decided after discussing with your dietitian.
